About
Ring-tailed lemur. Inhabits mainly the dry forests of southern Madagascar and is notable for its ringed black-and-white tail. It has a habit of sunning to warm its belly and eats fruit, flowers, and leaves, occasionally also taking small vertebrates. It forms matriarchal multi-male multi-female groups of 15–20 individuals, with females dominant. Communication and territorial disputes via scent glands are important, and breeding is seasonal with typically a single offspring. Populations have declined due to habitat destruction and hunting, and it is listed as threatened.
