About
The Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) inhabits the tropical rainforests of Borneo and moves slowly, mainly more than 10 meters above the ground in the canopy. Body length is 1.1–1.4 m with marked sexual dimorphism: males weigh about 90 kg and females about 40 kg. They primarily eat fruit, and during periods of fruit scarcity they consume leaves, bark, and seeds. Reproduction is nonseasonal with long intervals between births; gestation lasts about eight months. The harsh conditions in Borneo affect individuals’ energy storage and metabolic traits, and due to deforestation, fires, and illegal trafficking of young animals, they are classified as Critically Endangered (IUCN Category I A).
