About
The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a large anteater found in humid and dry forests, grasslands, and savannas of Central and South America. It can exceed 2 m in length from head to tail; it has a long snout and a tongue coated with sticky saliva that it flicks in and out many times per minute to lick up ants and termites. It feeds by using long claws on its forelimbs to tear open nests, and it usually lives a solitary, primarily terrestrial life. Gestation lasts about 171–184 days and typically produces a single offspring. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable (Category II).
