About
Guinea pig. A domesticated species of cavy originally derived from ancestors native to the highlands of the Andes and subsequently brought into human care. As a domestic species there is no wild distribution; selective breeding has produced a variety of coat colors and hair types. Body length is about 20–40 cm, with virtually no tail. They are social, showing crepuscular activity patterns. Breeding can occur year-round; gestation lasts about two months and they give birth to well-developed young. They are kept worldwide as experimental animals and pets. Conservation status: Not Evaluated.
