About
The Japanese macaque is a monkey endemic to Japan, living widely from temperate to cool-temperate forests, heavy snowfall areas, and alpine zones throughout the country except Hokkaido, Ibaraki, and Okinawa. Body length is about 55 cm, tail is short at about 8 cm, and males are larger than females. It is active during the day and eats fruits, seeds, leaves, bark, fungi, and in summer also insects. It typically forms multi-male multi-female troops and has a matrilineal social structure. Reproduction is seasonal; pregnancy lasts 5–6 months, and weaning occurs at 1–1.5 years. Although currently numerous and classified as Least Concern (LC), crop damage and culling are issues.
