About
Lion-tailed macaque. It lives arboreally in broadleaf forests of the Western Ghats in southwestern India. It is characterized by a white mane around the face and a tufted tail tip that evoke a lionlike appearance. It primarily eats fruit, but also consumes seeds, leaves, and insects. It forms groups of 10–30 individuals and uniquely asserts territory with loud calls. It has a matrilineal social structure; males leave the group after reaching maturity. Population numbers are declining and it is classified as Endangered (IUCN Red List category: Endangered, formerly listed as IUCN category I B). Scientific name: Macaca silenus.
