About
The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a large Old World monkey that inhabits the tropical rainforests of Central Africa. Males have vivid facial coloration and brightly colored rumps. They are primarily terrestrial and active during the day, feeding on fruits and seeds, bark, and insects. Troops are multi-male, multi-female and can number from several dozen to several hundred individuals; reproduction is seasonal. Hunting and habitat destruction have reduced their populations, and they are listed as a threatened species.
