About
Tufted capuchin (Sapajus apella). Widely distributed in the Amazon region of South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru, inhabiting tropical rainforests and swamp forests. It lives mainly in the trees but often descends to the ground and lives in social groups. Its diet centers on fruit and insects, and it also eats seeds and small vertebrates. It is known for high intelligence, using tools to crack hard fruits and to capture prey. Groups are multi-male/multi-female with clear dominance hierarchies; reproduction shows little seasonality, gestation is of moderate length, and offspring are raised within the group. Although numbers have declined due to deforestation and hunting, it is currently assessed as Least Concern.
