About
The collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) is a peccary widely distributed from the southern part of North America through South America, and is adapted to diverse environments such as forests, grasslands, and deserts. It forms groups composed of one to two males, multiple females, and young. During the day it forages and rests in small subgroups, and at dawn and dusk it gathers and moves long distances. It maintains group bonds through marking with scent glands, vocalizations and odors, and grooming. Omnivorous with a high proportion of plant matter in its diet, it consumes fruits, roots, insects, and other items. Its population is stable, and the IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
