About
Red-handed tamarin. Widely distributed in the tropical rainforests of South America, including Brazil, the Guianas, and Suriname. Only the hands and feet have yellow hair while the body is black; head-body length is about 20–28 cm and the tail is longer than the body. Diurnal, feeding on insects and small animals, fruits, eggs, and tree sap. Lives in groups of 2–6 individuals; groups maintain territories and mark them with scent glands. Reproduction shows little seasonality; a dominant female breeds within the group and usually gives birth to twins, and the whole group helps raise the young. Currently listed as Least Concern.
