About
California sea lion. Lives in coastal regions of the northeastern Pacific, occurring from the west coast of the United States to the Baja California Peninsula. Adult males are large, 2.3–2.5 m, females are somewhat smaller, and there is a clear social sexual dimorphism. They eat sardines and mackerel and cephalopods such as octopus and squid; dives are typically around 50 m but they can dive deeper. Breeding occurs from May to August; males establish territories and fight during the breeding season, and maternal care includes repeated cycles of nursing and foraging. Population trend is increasing and it is classified as Least Concern.
