About
The red-backed bearded saki (Chiropotes chiropotes) is a monkey that lives in the humid tropical forests of northern South America. Its body is covered with dense fur that is brownish in color, and it has a distinctive "beard." Head-body length is about 40 cm and body weight is approximately 3 kg; the tail is about the same length as the body but is not prehensile (juveniles have a prehensile tail). It primarily prefers seeds and can crack even hard seeds to eat them; it also consumes flowers, fruits, and insects. It forms multi-male, multi-female groups that can reach 30–40 individuals and may form mixed flocks with other capuchin relatives. Many aspects of its reproduction and parental care remain unknown, and it is regarded as a "mysterious" monkey. Its conservation status is Near Threatened.
