About
The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) is a large rhinoceros that lives in riverside grasslands, wetlands, marshes, and areas near forests in northern India and southern Nepal. Its body length is about 3–3.8 m, shoulder height 1.7–2 m, and weight approximately 1.8–2.7 tonnes; it has a single horn (20–60 cm). It is primarily a grazing herbivore that eats ground grasses, and also consumes aquatic plants, fruit, leaves, and crops. During the day it wades into water and wallows in mud to protect itself from parasites and direct sunlight. Reproduction is not seasonal; gestation lasts 15–16 months, and mothers and offspring stay together for an extended period. Population numbers have been recovering due to conservation efforts, but habitat changes and flooding are concerns. Conservation status: Vulnerable (VU).
