About
The white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is a large herbivorous mammal that lives mainly in grasslands, scrub, and savannas of southern Africa. It is one of the largest of the rhinoceroses and has a broad, flat mouth, feeding primarily on grasses as a grazer. It is diurnal to crepuscular; males are often solitary while females commonly form small groups, and they communicate territorial and reproductive information using dung and urine. Gestation lasts about 16 months and typically results in a single calf, with several years between births. Numbers fluctuate due to poaching and habitat conversion, and the species is classified as Near Threatened.
