About
Chinese snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana). A monkey that inhabits limited mountainous areas of central and western China, living in coniferous and deciduous forests at altitudes of 2,000–3,000 m. It has long golden fur and a distinctive nose, adapted to cold environments. It mainly eats fruit, seeds, and young leaves, and in winter consumes lichens and bark. It has a multi-tiered social structure, forming large troops composed of many one-male units that alter their cohesion seasonally. Breeding is seasonal, with a mating season and typically a single offspring born after gestation. Its population has declined due to habitat loss and hunting, and it is classified as Critically Endangered (IUCN category 1B).
