About
The Black-footed cat (Felis nigripes) is one of the smallest felids, inhabiting savannas and semi-deserts of southern Africa. Its body length is 30–50 cm, and the black soles of its feet are the origin of its name. It primarily preys on rodents and birds and is a voracious eater, capable of catching many prey items in a single night. It is nocturnal and solitary, with a home range of about 10–20 km². Breeding is seasonal; gestation lasts about 60–68 days, and typically two kittens are born. Populations have declined due to habitat loss and snares, and it is listed as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List category II).
