About
The White-nosed coati (Nasua narica molaris) ranges from Central America to northern South America and inhabits a variety of forests, from lowland tropical rainforest to montane dry forest. Using its distinctive long snout and sensitive sense of smell to check scents on the ground, it forages for food; it is omnivorous, eating insects and beetles, rodents, lizards, amphibians, fruits, eggs, and other items. Social structure differs by sex: males are solitary, while females form bands of a few to several dozen individuals. Although local populations have declined due to habitat destruction and hunting, the species as a whole is classified as of Least Concern.
