About
Hoffmann's two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) ranges from Central America to northwestern South America, primarily inhabiting lowland and montane tropical rainforests up to 3,300 m elevation. It has a head-body length of about 58–70 cm, weighs 4–8 kg, and lacks a tail. It feeds on plant matter such as leaves, buds, flowers, fruits, and tree sap, obtaining most of its water from its food. It spends its time in the trees and descends to the ground only to defecate or move, and it can swim to cross rivers. Generally solitary, it can be active day or night, spending most of each day resting. Gestation lasts about 11.5 months and usually results in a single offspring, with the mother and young staying together until about one year of age. The IUCN currently classifies it as Near Threatened, with habitat destruction, capture, and death by electrocution among the threats it faces.
