About
Eastern bongo. A large forest-dwelling antelope native to African forests, notable for its vivid reddish-brown coat marked with white stripes. It prefers disturbed areas and ecotones in tropical rainforests, lowland and montane forests, and visits salt licks to replenish essential minerals. Primarily a browser that feeds on leaves, shoots and bark, it is preyed upon by predators such as leopards and lions. Bongos can form herds and show nocturnal or crepuscular activity patterns. Habitat destruction, hunting, and livestock-borne diseases threaten the species, and it is classified as Near Threatened.
