About
The fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) is one of the largest predators living in Madagascar. Its primary habitat is forest, and it has a long tail, highly mobile hind limbs, and retractable claws adapted for moving in the trees. It preys mainly on lemurs and small mammals, as well as birds, reptiles, and insects. It is generally solitary, although temporary cooperative behavior has been reported. Breeding is seasonal: mating occurs in September–October, gestation is about 90 days, and females give birth to 2–4 young. Populations have declined due to habitat destruction and hunting, and the species is listed as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List Category II).
