About
The ocelot is a medium-sized felid widely distributed from Central and South America to the southern United States. It prefers dense vegetation and adapts to habitats ranging from scrubby woodlands and mangroves to dry and humid forests; it is also skilled at climbing and swimming. Primarily nocturnal and solitary, its main diet consists of small to medium-sized mammals, and it also takes reptiles, birds, fish, crustaceans, and carrion. Reproduction varies regionally but typically occurs about once a year; gestation lasts approximately 79–82 days, producing one to two offspring, and the parental care period is relatively long. Population numbers are declining due to fur trapping and habitat loss, but because of its wide distribution it is currently classified as of Least Concern.
