About
The Northern slow loris (Nycticebus bengalensis) is a nocturnal loris distributed in the tropical rainforests and evergreen forests of South and Southeast Asia. With a body length of 26–38 cm and a weight of 1–2 kg, it is large for lorises and adapted to an arboreal lifestyle. It feeds on fruits, resin, sap, nectar, insects, and other items; olfactory communication and the vomeronasal (Jacobson’s) organ are important for reproduction. It produces a toxin from glandular secretions mixed with saliva for defense, but habitat destruction and hunting have reduced populations, and it is classified as Critically Endangered (IUCN Category I B).
