About
The sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) is an omnivorous bear that inhabits forested areas of India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It feeds heavily on insects, especially ants and termites, and also consumes fruit, flowers, and honey. It is characterized by long claws and powerful forelimbs used to dig into nests and a long tongue used to scoop prey. It is nocturnal and solitary; breeding seasons vary regionally but are generally observed from spring to summer. Habitat loss and poaching have reduced population numbers, and it is listed as Vulnerable (VU).
