About
The spotted hyaena lives and hunts cooperatively in groups called clans, and captures the majority of its prey itself. Widely distributed across savannas and semi-deserts, it also functions as a scavenger, consuming and breaking down nearly everything with its powerful bone-crushing bite. Its society is female-dominant with a complex hierarchy, and breeding can occur year-round. Although numbers are currently declining, it is assessed as Least Concern.
