About
The emperor tamarin (Saguinus imperator) is a small New World monkey that inhabits lowland tropical rainforest in the upper Amazon regions of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. It is characterized by a black face and a prominent white mustache. Body length is about 25 cm, weight about 500 g, and the tail is about 30 cm long. It is diurnal and eats fruit, tree sap, and insects, showing a particular preference for crickets. It moves by clinging to trees and leaping, and typically forms mixed-sex groups of up to 15 individuals. The gestation period is about 140 days and twins are common; parental care is shared within the group. Populations are declining due to habitat loss and other factors, and its conservation status is Least Concern (LC).
