About
Red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra). A large lemur that inhabits the tropical moist forests of northeastern Madagascar and spends almost all of its time in the trees. Its diet is primarily fruit; it also eats flowers, nectar, and leaves. Characteristically, it tears fruit with its mouth and swallows it whole, later excreting seeds intact and thus contributing to forest regeneration. Body length is about 60 cm and weight about 3.5 kg. Groups are multi-male, multi-female and range from 5 to 31 individuals. Breeding occurs in the dry season; gestation is about 100 days, yielding 2–3 offspring which are reared in a nest. It is classified as Critically Endangered (Category I A) due to habitat destruction, hunting, and the periodic impacts of cyclones.
