The screaming hairy armadillo (Chaetophractus vellerosus) is a small armadillo that inhabits dry savannas and similar habitats in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Paraguay. Long hair grows on its belly and in the gaps of its carapace, and it is known for emitting a baby-like cry when captured. It primarily eats insects and larvae, and consumes a greater amount of plant matter seasonally. It lives alone, digging burrows, and breeds by mating in autumn and giving birth in spring. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
