About
The spotted seal has sesame-like spots and is a seal that depends on pack ice and coastal areas for its life. It breeds mainly in the Bering Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Sea of Japan, giving birth to white pups on the pack ice. Its diet is broad, eating sardines, mackerel, cod, squid, crustaceans, and others, with foraging mainly in shallow waters. It is basically solitary, but can form large aggregations at resting sites. Currently its population is large, and the IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.
