About
The potto (Perodicticus potto) is a nocturnal loris that lives in the treetops of West African rainforests and gallery forests. It moves slowly at heights of about 5–30 m, relying on smell for foraging using its large eyes and a moist nose. It eats mainly fruit, insects, and small animals, and in the dry season also consumes tree sap and gum. Body length is 30–40 cm and it has a short tail; its reduced index finger and characteristic hooked nails enable a secure grip on branches. The potto is usually solitary and marks its territory with scent glands and urine. Females give birth about once a year, gestation lasts around 200 days, and weaning and sexual maturity take from several months up to about 1–1.5 years. In recent years it has been classified as Near Threatened due to habitat destruction and hunting.
