About
Grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus). A smallest-sized lemur living in the dry coastal forests of western to southwestern Madagascar. Head-body length about 12 cm, weight about 60 g, nocturnal. Omnivorous with a diet mainly of insects, also using fruit, flowers, tree sap and nectar. It grasps vertical branches in a distinctive “flag posture” to quickly catch prey, and has suction-cup-like hands and sharp teeth adapted for eating beetles. In winter it survives by slowing activity using fat stored in the tail. Breeding season is September–March; gestation about 55–70 days, usually giving birth to twins. Population is declining, but the IUCN assesses it as Least Concern (LC).
