About
The ermine (Mustela erminea) is a mustelid distributed across a wide range of environments in the Northern Hemisphere, from tundra to forests and grasslands. Its long body and neck and slender form are suited for entering burrows to hunt, and the black tip on the tail is thought to distract predators. It feeds mainly on rodents, and occasionally attacks larger rabbits. Some populations molt to white in winter, and during hunting they may display vigorous movements called "weasel war dance." Breeding occurs in spring with delayed implantation, its range is extensive, and its conservation status is Least Concern.
