The pine marten (Martes martes) inhabits forests across Europe and is active both arboreally and on the ground. It is an adept climber, preying on arboreal animals such as squirrels, and in winter it also hunts on the ground and may cache food. Omnivorous, it feeds on small mammals, birds, fruits, insects, and other items. It is nocturnal and solitary; after summer mating, delayed implantation occurs and young are born in spring. Conservation status: Least Concern.
