About
Banded mongoose (Mungos mungo). Widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, it adapts to savannas, forests, and human-associated environments such as rural areas. It lives in packs of about 7–40 individuals with a dominance hierarchy; a notable feature is that multiple females can breed. Breeding is synchronized with females giving birth at the same time, and pup rearing is carried out cooperatively by the whole group. Omnivorous, it eats insects, small animals, fruits, and other items, and is diurnal, being most active just after sunrise and in the late afternoon. Because of its wide distribution and large population, it is currently classified as Least Concern.
