About
The yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata) lives in dry, open country in southern Africa, occurring in Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and other areas. It is diurnal and lives in burrows in family-centered social groups; burrows have multiple chambers and entrances and are sometimes shared with other species. It feeds mainly on insects but also takes small rodents, birds, reptiles and seeds. Reproduction is seasonal, with births mainly from August to November; usually about two young are born. Population levels are stable and it is assessed as Least Concern.
