About
Golden-headed tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas). A small primate endemic to the coastal forests of Bahia state in eastern Brazil. The face and hands and feet are golden while the body is black, and the tail is longer than the body. It forages in the trees 3–10 m above ground, eating fruit, flowers, nectar, resin, and small animals such as frogs and lizards. It usually lives in groups of 2–8 individuals and communicates by vocalizations, scent, and grooming. Breeding is concentrated in the warm, humid months from September to March; gestation is about 130 days and typically results in twins. Because of habitat fragmentation and development, population numbers are low, and it is classified as Endangered (IUCN Category I B).
