The crowned sifaka (Propithecus coronatus) is a sifaka that lives in the canopy of tropical dry forests in western Madagascar. It is characterized by an appearance that looks as if it is wearing a black crown on its head. Head-body length is about 39–45 cm, weight is 3.5–4.3 kg, and the tail is about 50 cm. It is diurnal and feeds mainly on flowers, also consuming leaves and fruit. In the trees it clings vertically to trunks and moves by leaping with powerful hind limbs; on the ground it shows a distinctive bipedal hopping gait with its forelimbs raised. Groups consist of around 2–8 individuals, with one or more females and several males, forming a female-dominant society; territories are marked by scent. The species is listed as Endangered I B, with habitat loss as the major threat.
