About
The dhole (Cuon alpinus) is a highly social canid native to Asia that is almost entirely carnivorous and primarily hunts in packs. Its preferred prey is medium-sized ungulates, but prey species range broadly from small mammals to large herbivores. Packs usually number 5–12 individuals but can sometimes exceed 20, and their territory size and composition vary with prey availability. Breeding is seasonal, with a gestation period of about 60–63 days; pups are raised in dens with cooperative care from the pack. Population numbers are declining, and the species is classified as Endangered (IUCN Red List category equivalent to “Critically Endangered IB” in the source).
