About
Golden Takin (Budorcas taxicolor). A large bovine that inhabits mountainous areas of China, Bhutan, India, and Myanmar. It prefers rocky terrain with pine forests, temperate to subtropical forests, and grass-rich areas, and makes seasonal movements at elevations around 1,000–4,000 m. Males are larger than females, with a body length of about 2.1–2.2 m; both sexes have horns. It feeds on more than 150 species of plants, including leaves, grasses, and bamboo shoots, and is active at dawn and dusk. In summer it forms large herds and in winter smaller groups; mature males live alone outside the breeding season. Gestation lasts about 200–220 days, and one offspring is born at a time. Habitat destruction and hunting have reduced population numbers, and it is listed as Vulnerable (IUCN Red List category II).
