About
The sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii gratus) is an antelope that depends on vegetation in swamps, wetlands, and areas near mangroves, occurring widely from central to western Africa. It walks on long hooves adapted for muddy ground and is also capable of swimming. Its diet consists of leaves, twigs, grasses, and fruits, and its predators include lions and leopards. Sitatungas are sedentary and exhibit weak sociality; breeding occurs year-round with a gestation of about 7.5–8 months, typically producing a single offspring. Populations are declining and conservation is needed.
