About
Desert cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus audubonii). It inhabits dry grasslands, shrublands, and desert areas from Mexico into the United States, up to about 1,800 m in elevation. It spends the day in shade such as rock crevices, and its ears help with heat dissipation. Body length is 35–38 cm; males weigh about 850 g and females about 1 kg. It seasonally feeds on grasses, shrubs, fruits, and flowers. Primarily active at night and during dawn and dusk, it is strongly solitary. Gestation lasts about one month; females can give birth up to five times per year, averaging three young per litter. Despite pressures from predation and habitat destruction, the IUCN classifies it as Least Concern.
