Commerson's dolphin inhabits two disjunct ranges in the southern Atlantic and the Indian Ocean and is found in rough coastal waters, harbors, and near estuaries. Adults reach about 1.5–1.7 m in length. They are notable for rounded fins and a distinctive black-and-white two-tone coloration; calves develop the clear patterning as they grow. They primarily feed on schooling small fish, cephalopods, and shrimp, foraging singly, in small groups of around 10 individuals, and sometimes in groups exceeding 30. Gestation lasts 11–12 months, births occur at intervals of 2–4 years, and lactation continues for about 9 months. Bycatch and reductions in prey resources are of concern, but the IUCN assesses the species as Near Threatened.
