About
The bighorn sheep is a sheep that inhabits grasslands, foothills, and cliffed areas of western North America, with a range from Canada to northern Mexico. Both sexes develop characteristic large, curled horns, but the males’ horns are markedly larger and used in breeding. They primarily eat grasses, undertake seasonal movements, and live in sex-segregated groups outside the breeding season. During the autumn to winter breeding season, males clash their horns violently in competition. Populations declined due to past hunting, but conservation measures have led to recovery, and they are currently assessed as Least Concern.
