About
Mountain/woolly tapir (Tapirus pinchaque). A species living in highlands of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, adapted to cloud forests and montane forests at elevations of 2,000–4,000 m. It is the smallest tapir species, with dense fur that provides insulation. It feeds on leaves, branches, and fruits using its long snout, is a solitary animal active at dawn and dusk, and reproduces mostly before the rainy season; gestation lasts about 13 months and typically results in a single offspring. Populations are declining due to habitat destruction and fragmentation, and climate change, and the species is listed as Critically Endangered (IUCN Category I B).
