About
Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra). It inhabits grasslands, dry forests, semi-deserts, and areas around farmland primarily in India and Nepal. Males are dark brown to blackish and females are pale brown, showing pronounced sexual dimorphism. Only the males have spiral horns that reach their maximum length and are used in territorial contests during the breeding season. It is primarily a grazer feeding on short grasses; water is important, but it has some drought tolerance. Daily activity patterns vary with temperature, and vigilance and sharing of danger through leaping are seen in herds. Populations declined due to excessive hunting but have been recovering with protection; the IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.
