About
Yellow baboon (Papio cynocephalus). A baboon species widely distributed across savannas and open woodlands throughout East Africa. Troop sizes typically range from about 30 to 80 individuals in multimale–multifemale groups. Highly terrestrial, they eat a varied diet including grasses, fungi, lichens, small animals, and tree sap. Males and females differ markedly in size; males are larger and have well-developed canine teeth. Society is matrilineal, and dominance rank affects access to mating opportunities and food; low-ranking males obtain mating opportunities through alliances and relationships with females. Breeding occurs year-round; gestation lasts about 180 days, and usually a single infant is born. Because of its wide range, the species is assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN.
