About
The Assam macaque (Macaca assamensis) is a macaque distributed from Nepal and northeastern India through southern China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Its coat ranges from grayish-brown to yellowish-brown; the sparsely haired face is a pale brown to reddish tint, and the tail is shorter than the body. It occupies a wide variety of habitats, including montane evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, bamboo groves, and limestone areas, and is active in daytime in social groups. It uses both the trees and the ground and is omnivorous, eating fruit, young leaves, flowers, seeds, and insects, flexibly adjusting the proportions of different foods by region and season. It sometimes raids crops, causing conflict with people. Populations are declining due to forest clearance and fragmentation and hunting; the species is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List.
