About
Malayan porcupine. A terrestrial porcupine that inhabits forests, adjacent open areas, and agricultural land in Southeast Asia, spending the daytime in burrows it digs. Body length is 60–75 cm, tail short, and quill length varies by body region. It feeds mainly on fruits, bulbs, and rhizomes, and sometimes carries food back to its nest. Breeding occurs multiple times a year, with a gestation period of about 110 days. In ecosystems it plays important roles in seed predation and dispersal and in soil modification through digging. Conservation status: Least Concern.
