About
The South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) is a species of sea lion that inhabits coastal regions of South America, with breeding and resting primarily occurring along the shore. Males are markedly larger than females and possess manes; individuals may live in groups or singly. Their diet mainly consists of marine prey such as fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Known predators include orcas and sharks, and on land pumas. Breeding is concentrated in the Southern Hemisphere summer, during which males establish breeding territories and mate with multiple females. The species recovered from past overexploitation and is currently assessed as Least Concern.
