About
Southern hairy-nosed wombat. A marsupial that inhabits semi-arid regions, shrubland, savanna, and woodland in southern Australia. Head–body length about 85 cm, weight around 26 kg, with a short tail. Nocturnal and crepuscular, generally solitary, living in long burrows excavated in the ground. Herbivorous, feeding on leaves, grasses, roots, and bark, obtaining nutrients by hindgut fermentation aided by intestinal bacteria. Reproduction is influenced by rainfall; after a gestation of about three weeks, usually a single young is born between September and December and is reared in the pouch for about 6–7 months. Threats include competition for food with rabbits and livestock, sarcoptic mange, drought, and habitat modification; listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
