About
The belly-banded squirrel (Callosciurus erythraeus) has a broad distribution across Asia and inhabits montane evergreen forests, broadleaf forests, and mixed conifer–broadleaf forests. Head-body length is 16–26 cm and weight is about 300–460 g; the coloration of the belly varies by region. It is diurnal and arboreal, feeding on more than 40 plant species as well as insects and bird eggs. Its behavior is largely solitary; home ranges of females do not overlap. Breeding can occur year-round; gestation lasts 47–49 days and up to four young are born per litter. Because of its wide range and stable population, the IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
